Overview
Dynamic contemporary art scenes have been expanding internationally in past decades at a heightened pace, now the art world has predominantly shifted to virtual activities. Through intimate dialogue with distinguished and emerging artists, curators, critics, gallerists, and specialists, this course provides in-depth insight into the production, selection, exhibition, and sale of contemporary art NOW.
The objective of the course is to gain international access to the intimate spaces of contemporary art production, exhibition, and collection.

Academic Profile
Kathleen Madden is an art historian who collects contemporary art and contributes regularly to art books and magazines such as Artforum, Art in America, and OSMOS. She contributed to Phaidon’s Great Women Artists, published in late 2019 and recently submitted texts for Phaidon’s forthcoming Vitamin D-3 book. Having completed her M.A. with Rosalind Krauss and Benjamin H.D. Buchloh at Columbia University, where she earlier attained a B.A. at Barnard College, Kathleen was prepared to be part of the curatorial teams producing exhibitions at Tate Modern, the Barbican Art Gallery, and the Serpentine Gallery, as well as initiate a Ph.D. focused on the landmark 1969 exhibition curated by Harald Szeemann at the Kunsthalle Bern, Live in Your Head: When Attitudes Become Form as it related to site specificity and collaborative practice. As the Commissioning Editor of Contemporary Art at Phaidon, London, the premier global publisher of the creative arts, Kathleen published books such as Vitamin Ph: New Perspectives in Photography and Ice Cream: Contemporary Art and Culture. Additionally, she has since produced books with artists such as Darren Almond, Chloe Piene, Philippe Parreno, Matthew Day Jackson, Marine Huggonier, the Royal College of Art Sculpture program M.A. students, and Performa 13, published by Gregory R. Miller & Co. Since 2011, Kathleen has lectured extensively about the emerging art scene for Barnard College, Columbia University and for M.A. students and public programs at Sotheby’s Institute of Art, New York. As an active collector she is a member of the Tate North American Acquisitions Committee, Tate Americas. Kathleen is a native New Yorker, who lived in London for eight years having returned to New York in 2010.
